We get it, starting strength training can be a little intimidating. Maybe you're unsure what exercises to do, or whether your form is correct, or how much weight to lift. That's why, through 20 May, we've partnered with personal trainer and coach Dan Vermont to offer complementary 45-minute 1:1 virtual training sessions with each Fittle Box purchase.
Think of this PT session less as a workout, and more as a starting point: a chance to understand your equipment, build confidence, and get clear on what to do next. "These sessions are really a learning experience," Dan tells us. "I’ll talk through sets, reps, weight, and give them a structure they can follow alongside the workouts already on Fittle."
We recently sat down with Dan to talk through some of his most commonly asked questions, as well as the best ways to get started on your strength training journey.
Most people aren’t new to exercise, they’re new to strength training. The majority of questions I get aren’t about pushing harder, they’re about knowing what to do in the first place.
Common concerns include:
Even people who’ve been to the gym often lack confidence when it comes to weights. There’s that hesitation: am I lifting too heavy, too light, is my form right?
It’s a loaded question — it completely depends on the individual. You don’t need anything complicated to build strength, you just need to be consistent with the basics. Keep it simple. Squats, deadlifts, presses. Start light, with 3 sets of 12–15 reps, and build a base level of strength. If you can complete the sets and reps comfortably, then build from there.
A simple structure is enough:
Interestingly, most people aren’t looking for a full workout session. It’s much more of a confidence and learning thing than anything else.
I’ll usually start by saying, “Talk me through what you’re doing now. What’s your current routine? Why did you get the box? What do you want to achieve?” That helps me understand their goals — whether that’s building strength, losing weight, or just gaining confidence.
Some people have never done strength training at all, so we strip it right back. Literally: this is a dumbbell, this is a barbell, this is how you load it. Others have the experience and are just looking for a refresher or to better understand their box. We can cover it all.
I stick to the basics and control the controllables. My goal is to help people become stronger and healthier long-term. There’s a lot of noise in the fitness industry — conflicting advice, too much information. Working with a PT helps cut through that and tailor things to the individual. What works for one person won’t work for another. It has to fit around your life. That’s where training at home works really well.
